It is important that communities have the tools and skills to tell their own stories so that they have the power to construct and communicate their own identity. Arviat Film Society (AFS) has aimed to do this. It was a small, non-profit, youth and community-driven film society.
Tony Eetak re-connects with Jordan Konek, both from Arviat, Nunavut on campus at the University of Winnipeg during the Inuit Studies Conference earlier this month. Ten years ago this October, Jordan was a student with the original Nanisiniq Arviat History Project. This project draws on many of those early experiences.

A special and unexpected opportunity to explore careers in media came while we were all attending a closing session for the Inuit Studies Conference. Our project’s participating artists were able to get hands-on with CBC North’s Pauline Pemik and Jaison Empson as they interviewed the youth for CBC News and CBC Igalaaq.

Recreating Environments of Inclusion: Northern Research is a unique, evolving audio visual series featuring the Inclusion in Northern Research knowledge exchange community; and debuts an equity and inclusion toolkit with tangible actions for research and impact creation communities, and their emerging, collaborative partnerships.
In this first installment debuting at ArcticNet Annual Scientific Summit 2021, Northern and Southern scientists, researchers, cultural impact creators and community builders outline experiential challenges and bridge their insights into required solutions for co-creating a collaborative impact movement to address planetary challenges being faced in the Arctic regions.
Our incubator’s collaborators with the Inclusion in Northern Research project are back for another iteration and we’re excited to be invited to be part of these amazing and much-anticipated sessions. This year’s theme will feature a special topic, ReCreating Environments of Inclusion: Northern Research.
