Local Services Board of Melgund – Dec. 24, 2024

Melgund Township, December 22, 2024 – The Local Service Board (LSB) of Melgund held its regular meeting on Monday, December 16th, 2024, at 7:00 pm at the hall. The meeting, chaired by Janet Connor, saw the attendance of members Janet Connor, Pete Dunham, Morris and Michelle Robinson, Terri Bell, and Jamie Bell.

The meeting began promptly at 7:04 pm, with the minutes from the previous meeting on November 18th, 2024, being read and approved, following minor corrections to typographical errors. The minutes were moved for approval by Janet Connor and seconded by Morris Robinson.

Correspondence Updates Several pieces of correspondence were discussed. A notable announcement was received from Chantelle Gascon of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), who informed the board that Ignace had been selected as the host community for the Deep Geological Repository (DGR). The board also received updates from the DoKura and MPAC newsletters, and the IPC Annual Statistics Submissions, though no statistics were reported from the Melgund area.

Additionally, Ian Pyke from the Ministry of Northern Development (MND) thanked the board for submitting the 2024-2025 budget and passed by-laws. Greg Rickford’s pre-budget consultations were noted, though no submissions were received. Tanya Jones from the Ambulance and Fire Communication Centre in Kenora reached out to the board regarding an update to road names in Melgund Township. Pete Dunham will contact Tanya to assist with this project.

Ongoing Community Activities The meeting addressed ongoing community efforts, including a call for volunteers for the Garbage Roster for January, June, and July 2025. Morris and Janet Robinson volunteered to cover these dates if no additional volunteers are found.

The recent Community Christmas Supper, held on December 7th, 2024, was highlighted as a great success. The event featured a festive meal, followed by Christmas Bingo and a Garage Sale gift exchange. Janet and the community thanked the volunteers and cooks who made the event a memorable one.

Looking ahead, the board announced that Games Night will return on Sunday, January 12th, 2025, from 4-7 pm, offering the community a chance to enjoy games and pizza together.

New Business and By-Law Update The board discussed By-Law 15-2024, which approves GoDaddy for hosting the DymentCommunity.com website. The by-law was amended to reflect a price increase from $298.18 plus taxes to $323.89 plus taxes. The amendment was moved by Janet Connor and seconded by Morris Robinson.

Family Day was also discussed, with plans to be finalized at the next LSB meeting in January 2025.

Treasurer’s Report The November 2024 Treasurer’s Report was presented and approved without any errors or omissions. The motion to accept the report was moved by Janet Connor and seconded by Pete Dunham.

Upcoming Events Several events were announced, including the next Games Night on Sunday, January 12th, 2025, from 4 to 7 pm, featuring pizza. The next LSB meeting will be held on Monday, January 20th, 2025, at 7 pm at the hall, with Family Day plans to be finalized in the coming weeks.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40 pm following a motion by Janet Connor and seconded by Pete Dunham.
