We’re thrilled to share the exciting news that the”Art Borups Corners,” project has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2024 Indigenous Intellectual Property Program grant! This incredible opportunity, announced by Minister François-Philippe Champagne on May 1, 2024, marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards better understanding why protecting and promoting Traditional Knowledge and Indigenous Cultural Expressions is so important.
The Indigenous Intellectual Property Program grants serve a crucial role in advancing reconciliation efforts and ensuring Indigenous participation in IP discussions. These grants not only provide resources for capacity building and education but also contribute to the protection of Indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions. The recipients of these grants, including organizations like the Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council and the Manitoba MĂ©tis Federation, will play pivotal roles in safeguarding Indigenous interests within the IP landscape.
Through workshops, educational initiatives and community-based participatory arts entrepreneurship, we’ll raise awareness about Indigenous Intellectual Property (IIP) rights and Indigenous Cultural Expressions (ICEs). As well, by providing a platform that respects artists’ control over their creative works, we aim to foster economic opportunities while working to safeguard cultural heritage.
But that’s not all! Our project goes beyond just workshops with our projects. We’re planning to conduct research to address northern food insecurity, optimize shipping logistics, and enhance supply chain efficiency. The Indigenous Intellectual Property Program is supporting Inuit-owned businesses and advancing self-determination, helping to pave the way for economic reconciliation through self-determination and self-reliance.
