The art of canning and food production is more than just a method of preserving food—it’s a journey into history, culture, sustainability, and creativity. This course is designed for artists, youth, and anyone curious about the intersection of food preservation and artistic expression. From understanding the basics of canning to exploring its cultural significance and entrepreneurial potential, participants will embark on an exciting journey that bridges the practical and the imaginative. By combining hands-on techniques with artistic storytelling, this course aims to inspire a deeper connection to the foods we preserve, the communities we serve, and the creative possibilities of food production.
Through interactive lessons and projects, participants will learn essential canning techniques, explore the history of food preservation, and discover how canning can become a form of artistic and cultural expression. Whether creating beautifully designed labels for jars, experimenting with flavors, or imagining the entrepreneurial potential of artisanal canned goods, this course offers an engaging and accessible way to approach food production. By the end, participants will have the skills to create their own unique canned products and the confidence to share their creations with their communities and the world.
We extend our thanks and appreciation to Manitoba Agriculture and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership for supporting this program. We had a great time learning to develop a course, and learned a lot about food production and canning in the process!
